Houston Travel Information

The city of Houston represents the fourth largest city within the nation behind only New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago. Situated in southeastern Texas near the Gulf of Mexico, Houston provides both big city attractions and island beaches residing within 30 miles. The warm climate brings water and outdoor recreational activities all year long.

Houston represents the economic heart of the Gulf Coast. Additionally the metropolitan area is a center for science and technology including the NASA Johnson Space Center. The facility is known also as Space Center Houston and is home to a science based theme park and U.S. space travel museum.

Amid the downtown skyscrapers of Houston are the headquarters of over 20 of the largest corporations in the United States. The port facilities within the metropolitan area represents the second largest in the nation as well. The overall wealth and money brought in by these corporations and the oil market have lured some of the finest museums and arts organizations in the country to the Space City.

Houston was ranked as the third most livable city in the U.S. by Places Rated Almanac in 1996 and 1997. Visitors to downtown will encounter a thriving business district , fine restaurants, numerous bars, and the Theater District. Downtown attracts over two million visitors per year to its many theaters and performing arts centers with over 800 per annum. Among the venues is the Alley Theatre, winner of the 1996 Special Tony Award in its hosting of both Broadway and Off-Broadway productions. The Houston Symphony and the Houston Grand Opera also call downtown Houston home.

For night life, Bayou Place offers restaurants, theaters, concert houses, and nightclubs. Art films are run at the Angelika Film Center and latino music is played at the Ruggles Bistro Latino. 53 parks and public places dot the central business district as does Minute Maid Park, home of the Houston Astros Baseball team. These are but a few of the amenities visitors will find when strolling through downtown Houston.

Venture out of downtown and one will encounter the Galleria section of the city. The lofty area outside of downtown is home to high end shopping and designer merchandise. Home to the Galleria Mall among the many restaurants and clubs, the Galleria section of town is fairly sophisticated and cosmopolitan. Also found within this part of town is the Toyota Center concert and sports venue. Home to both the NBA Houston Rockets and WBNA Houston Comets, the Toyota Center represents a first class facility serving the city and metropolitan area of Houston.

Houston Scenes

The skyline of Houston is one of the most impressive of any American city. Dominated by 700 Louisiana Place, the modern skyscrapers of the city encompass the area of downtown bound by Interstate 10, Interstate 45, and U.S. 59. Additional high rises however are rising along the Interstate 610 loop west of center city. Photos taken 10/22/03.
