New Orleans Travel Information

Founded in 1718 by the Frenchmen Jean Baptiste Le Moyne, Sieur de Bienville and John Law, New Orleans is one of the southeast's oldest city. Known as the Big Easy, New Orleans is rich in history, culture, and tradition. The French Quarter of New Orleans, or Vieux Carre, is home to a year round party surrounded by the infamous Bourbon Street. The district features a flair for french architecture and an array of bars, night clubs, museums, shops, and live music. It doesn't matter what time of year you visit New Orleans because the French Quarter always has something ongoing. Additionally the party doesn't start until later in the evening, while daytime events cater to the whole family.

Included within the Vieux Carre is the Cabildo, the site of the 1803 signing of the Louisiana Purchase which doubled the size of the United States. Jackson Square resides along Chartes Street and is home to Cathedral of St. Louis, the oldest Roman Catholic Cathedral within the U.S. The public square fronting the cathedral is open as a park and is home to live music, street vendors, and flower gardens. Additionally the antique stores and homes of Royal Street are some of the most elegant in an American city.

A discussion about New Orleans is not complete without talk of both Mardi Gras and Jazz & Blues music. Known as a hearth for the jazz and blues musical genre, the city is home to many jazz and Dixieland clubs and was the birthplace of Blues legend Louis Armstrong. The tradition of Mardi Gras permeates throughout the Gulf Coast of the U.S. While founded in Mobile, Alabama, Mardi Gras garners most of its notoriety from the Big Easy with its legendary parades and parties that last late through the night. Expect an eclectic array of revellers during the Mardi Gras season.
