Ray Lewis, Jamal Lewis, wide receiver Shannon Sharpe, and surprise Quarterback Trent Dilfer coalesced into a wining formula during the 2000 campaign. The Ravens rumbled to victories in their final seven regular season games. Their defense allowed a record low 165 points for the entire season. Victories over the Denver Broncos and Tennessee Titans propelled the Ravens into the AFC Championship game during their first playoff run. Then in a pair of defensive showcases, the Ravens ousted the Oakland Raiders 16-3 and the New York Giants 34-7 to bring the city of Baltimore a Superbowl title.
In the intervening years since the 2000-01 world title, the Ravens have continued to play defensively and hard under the leadership of team captain Ray Lewis. Until December 23, 2001, the Ravens had a 50 game streak of not allowing an opponent rush for more than 100 yards in a single game. The Ravens netted a wildcard spot in 2001-02 and the AFC North Division Title in 2003-04.
The Baltimore Ravens play in the AFC Northern Division with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Cleveland Browns, and Cincinnati Bengals. Previously the Ravens played in the AFC Central with the Steelers, Bengals, Tennessee Titans, and Jacksonville Jaguars. Rivalries in the AFC North are some of the most heated due to the close proximity of the respective teams geographically. However the rivalry with the Tennessee Titans remains fierce with the segregation of the two teams between the AFC North and South Divisions.
