San Diego Chargers Travel Information

The San Diego Chargers play in the AFC West Division of the National Football League. Historic rivalries exist between the Chargers and Oakland Raiders, Denver Broncos, and Kansas City Chiefs. The Chargers play their home games at Qualcomm Stadium within the city of San Diego. Known for its beautiful weather, San Diego plays outdoors in mild or balmy conditions throughout the NFL Season.
Originally the Los Angeles Chargers, the San Diego Chargers moved to America's Finest City for the 1961 season. It was not until 1967 that the Chargers had a major league venue to call home. That changed on August 20 when the Bolts debuted their newly opened San Diego Stadium. The $27.75 million stadium held 53,000 seats initially but saw expansion in 1984 to 61,000 seats at a cost of $9.1 million. A second expansion occurred in 1997 with $78 million spent to add an additional 10,500 seats. The San Diego Telecommunication Company Qualcomm paid the city $18 million to complete the 1997 expansion and thus were given the naming rights until 2017.
Qualcomm Stadium resides within Mission Valley five miles northeast of downtown San Diego. The multi-purpose stadium used to host both San Diego Chargers Football and San Diego Padres Baseball games. However with the 2004 opening of Petco Park downtown, the Padres moved out of Qualcomm Stadium. Thus the Chargers call Qualcomm Stadium home along with the San Diego State University Aztecs football home games. A new lease agreement between the Chargers and the city of San Diego keeps the franchise in America's Finest City through to 2008. An initiative is underway otherwise to construct a new football-only stadium in San Diego.
