San Diego Travel Information

The city of San Diego represents the seventh largest municipality within the United States according to the 2000 census. Home to several military bases and the Marine Corps Recruiting Depot, San Diego encompasses a diverse economy. Businesses exist in the high-tech, biotech, and tourism industries. The city and metropolitan area continues to grow as the alluring climate and many sunny days continue to bring new residents from other parts of the country.

As San Diego grows, so does its business and residential communities. Rich in diversity, San Diego resides just north of the Mexican border and therefore the Mexican-American influence coexists with Californian culture. The numerous military bases and installations throughout the metropolitan areas bring a multitude of out of state and area residents to the area. Many San Diegans are transplants from other states.
Like Los Angeles to the north, San Diego is served by an intricate freeway network headlined by the Interstate trio of Interstates 5, 8, and 805. The freeway system is joined by several state highways to complete the transportation network by car. Additionally a trolley system serves the city with lines out of downtown to TiJuana, Mexico and other points. Traffic congestion is an issue at times with the growth of regional employment centers at Sorrento Valley, Mission Valley, Otay Mesa, Downtown, and the Golden Triangle.
